Codiaeum variegatum - Croton
Codiaeum variegatum, commonly known as Croton, is a vibrant evergreen shrub with striking, leathery leaves that come in a range of colours, including red, yellow, green, orange, and purple. Known for its bold foliage and unique leaf shapes, this tropical plant is ideal for adding colour and texture to garden beds, borders, and indoor spaces. Growing to a height of 1–2 meters, Crotons brings a lively, tropical vibe to both indoor and outdoor landscapes.
Position
Crotons thrive in full sun to partial shade, with bright light enhancing its vibrant foliage colors. It performs best in warm, humid environments and is well-suited for tropical and subtropical regions. Indoors, place it in a location with bright, indirect light to maintain its vivid colours. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and should be protected from cold drafts and frost.
Growth
This slow to moderate-growing shrub reaches a mature height of 1–2 meters with a spread of about 1 meter. Its colourful, uniquely shaped leaves make it a standout in garden beds, mixed borders, or as a bold houseplant, adding texture and tropical interest to any setting.
Planting Guide
Codiaeum variegatum grows best in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Plant in spring, spacing plants about 60–90 cm apart for borders or groupings. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix with good drainage, and position the container in a bright, indirect light location. Water thoroughly after planting, and apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture.
Plant Care
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during warmer months, but avoid waterlogging, as Crotons do not tolerate overly wet conditions. Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Prune as needed to shape and remove any dead or damaged leaves, encouraging bushier growth.
